Why opinions work better than questions for couples

Lists of “questions for couples” have a flaw: you answer what the other person wants to hear. “What matters most to you in our relationship?” produces a polite answer and zero information.

An opinion is different. “Sleeping apart is a sign of a mature relationship.” Agree or disagree? You have to choose, right now, and the other person chooses at the same time. Thirty percent of players agree, on more than 5,000 votes. If you’re not on the same side, you just learned something in three seconds.

That’s the principle of the Unpopular Opinions app and its Couples theme: 160 opinions about love, money, exes and routine. You take turns swiping, the app shows the percentage of all players, and you find out where you’re Popular, Unpopular, or simply not on the same page as each other.

The rules for two

1. Vote in secret. Each of you puts a hand under the table, thumb up or down, and you reveal on “go”. Otherwise the second one just copies the first.
2. Count the disagreements, not the points. Your score is the number of cards where you weren’t on the same side.
3. One disagreement = one minute each. No interrupting. Then next card, even if it isn’t settled.
4. Big topics wait until tomorrow. The game reveals, it doesn’t rule.
5. Start light. Block 1 first. Money and plans come when you’re both relaxed.

A couple with fewer than 5 disagreements out of 30 is very aligned. Between 5 and 10 is normal, and it’s what makes the game interesting. Above 10, you’re going to have some long conversations, and that’s fine too.

The percentages below are those of the app’s players as of September 17, 2026, with the number of votes behind each number. They act as a third player: when you both agree but against the majority, it’s the two of you against everyone else.

Block 1: daily life together

Block 2: love and fights

13. Jealousy is proof of a lack of trust in the relationship. 52% agree · 5,208 votes.
14. A healthy couple has a lot of fights. 58% agree · 15,003 votes.
15. Arguments make a healthy relationship stronger. 71% agree · 5,544 votes.
16. A couple can stay together forever if they communicate. 72% agree · 864 votes.

“A healthy couple has a lot of fights” is the second most voted opinion in the whole app. At 58%, it’s also one of the safest bets for creating a disagreement between two people.

Block 3: money and logistics

17. Splitting expenses 50/50 from the start is a mistake. 32% agree · 5,142 votes.
18. Couples’ anniversaries are pointless. 32% agree · 5,190 votes.
19. It’s totally normal to pay rent to your partner who owns the place. 43% agree · 846 votes.

Block 4: plans and commitment

What to do with your disagreements

List the cards you disagreed on. Sort them into two piles: “that makes me laugh” (flowers, Valentine’s Day, cooking together) and “that gives me pause” (money, kids, marriage, forgiveness). The first pile makes good stories for your friends. The second deserves a real conversation, another day, without the game.
